Franz Ferdinand – Cirkus, Stockholm, 2009-03-21

Last night I saw Franz Ferdinand at Cirkus in Stockholm. I have heard that they’re a good live band and was curious to see for myself. I was certainly not disappointed. They started out with a very raw and uptempo version of The Dark of the Matinée from their first album, before launching into Do You Want To. Surprising to hear one of their biggest hits so early in the set.

The audience was really responsive and jumping along to most songs. Third song was the new single No You Girls, which had a nice projecting on the screen behind them. Perhaps the video for the song? I was struck by how tight Franz Ferdinand is as a band. When they play Take Me Out it’s on the same level as when Rage Against The Machine play Killing in the Name of, in terms of musicianship. I really enjoyed that Alex Kapranos played a brown Fender Telecaster Deluxe throughout the show, since I happen to own one of those as well. :)

Stand out songs for me were Bite Hard, What She Came For, Michael, Ulysses, Outsiders, and Lucid Dreams. I really like the new album, all those synthesizer sounds are so cool! Outsiders started out with a long synth intro by Alex Kapranos while a camera was sweeping across the stage showing everything in black and white outlines on the screen. Then the song ended with the entire band plus the drum tech playing drums – way cool! Lucid Dreams with all its synthesizers was also really great, although I wish they would have done the full version. It was cool that Paul Thomson switched to electric drums for the break, just like on the album.

The last song of the show was This Fire, a great song to end with. It will always make me think of playing Burnout 3: Takedown on my PS 2! I had tons of fun seeing Franz Ferdinand, and I will definitely see them again when they come back. And hopefully they’ll choose a different venue next time, because the problem with Cirkus is that the stage is a bit too low, so if you’re not in the front you end up seeing only the upper half of the band.

I would also like to mention German opening act Kissogram. A trio consisting of Drums, Keyboards, and Guitar/Song. They sounded pretty good. Got a little repetitive towards the end. You could tell that the singer was quite influenced by Jack White. Surprised to see an opening act that got to use most of the lights of the main act, even the backdrop was lit up! They also had their own Kissogram logo made up of white lights.

I don’t have a complete setlist yet, but here are some pictures from the show:

Wooo! That was such a great show! It was even better than I had imagined. Ulysses was definitely a show highlight! Not to mention Take Me Out, my favorite! My shoulder still hurts from being pummeled though ;)

D!!!! I didn’t know you had a blog! I’ll link to you… btw, if you’re wondering who in the hell this is, ask Imy… erg… Irma… LOL, I still think of her as Imy, but with the comic it can be kinda confusing! :D

How cool to see Franz, they haven’t come here yet… that I know of. I’m going to see a bunch of bands in May, including Chevelle, Drowning Pool, Powerman 5000 and about 12 more. I can’t wait!

Hi Luna! Sure, I know who you are! :) Thanks for stopping by my site. I wish we had the time to go to Phoenix, I would love to see Arizona! But this time we’re doing a road trip to Cleveland and Chicago. Hey, maybe next time! Is that a festival you’re going to in May?

  4. Luna says:

Yep… it’s actually in 4 days… on the 2nd. I’m not going to go though… I have to much to do this weekend, but I’m dropping off my daughter & her friends so they can go.

I will, however, be going to Nickelback in September with Papa Roach, Hinder & Saving Abel. I can’t wait!

  5. Daniel says:

That’s so cool! I’ve wanted to see Nickelback for ages! But they never come to Sweden and whenever we’re in the States they’re not touring.

  6. Luna says:

Oh, that’s a bummer!!! Well, if you guys want to come out to AZ in September… aka… the middle of hell season… LMAO
